MELI-POP is a parallel, randomized, controlled, multi-center clinical trial in a cohort of boys and girls initially aged 3 to 6 years and at risk of obesity, with an expected follow-up of 10 years. For the first time in Spain, the effect of an intervention on the incidence of obesity throughout childhood can be assessed.
Hypothesis: A healthy lifestyle, based on the promotion of a Mediterranean diet and regular physical activity, reduces the probability of developing obesity and cardiometabolic disorders during childhood and adolescence.
Main objective: To assess, in a cohort of boys and girls at high risk of obesity, whether an intervention during childhood and adolescence, considering healthy lifestyles based on the promotion of a Mediterranean eating pattern and regular physical activity, compared with a control group decreases the incidence of obesity 5 and 10 years after the start of the intervention. The trial will be held in Health Centers and / or schools in 7 different cities: Barcelona, Córdoba, Pamplona, Reus, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia and Zaragoza. It is a multidisciplinary team made up of pediatricians, dietitians-nutritionists, nurses or graduates in physical activity science. The University of Granada is represented by Dr. Concepción Aguilera responsible for managing, storing biological samples and performing biochemical and genetic analyzes.
