Physical therapy in sport and cancer

About this research area

Survival after cancer is increasing in Europe as a result of early diagnosis and improvements in treatment. It is estimated that there are around 17.8 million people who have a history of cancer.

The UCEENS’ research has shown that the survival phase after cancer is often transformed into a chronic process with the presence of physical and psychic symptoms that affect patients even years after completing their treatment. These symptoms can worsen the quality of life of people by producing personal and health costs derived from the occurrence of periods of sick leave and consumption of health resources due to the appearance of pain, fatigue, cognitive disorders, depression, or interpersonal problems.

It is estimated that around 10% of the 50 million patients who have overcome a cancer in the world are in the so-called survival phase that is around 2 years after the end of cancer treatment.

The European Community recognizes that in order to reduce the social and health cost of cancer in Europe, an integral approach to the problem is needed. There is an urgent need to bring into action interdisciplinary approaches covering physical therapy, exercise, and nutrition. Our research mainly focuses on the most prevalent tumours with greater survival (breast, colorectal, prostate).
